Digestive Red Flags: Common Food Combinations to Avoid

Many food pairings we are used to eating together can actually cause fermentation and discomfort in the stomach and intestines.  Which combinations are best avoided?
1. Cucumbers and Tomatoes
Tomatoes have high acidity, while cucumbers—due to their high water content—dilute gastric juice. Their combination can lead to fermentation and stomach discomfort.
* Use caution: If you have gastritis or Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
* Better way: Eat them in salads with leafy greens or separately from one another.
2. Eggs and Bacon
Both are high-protein, high-fat foods. Pairing them can cause heaviness in the stomach and slow down digestion.
* Use caution: If you have gallbladder issues or pancreatic dysfunction.
* Better way: Add vegetables to this dish to make digestion easier.
3. Cheese and Meat
Both products take a long time to digest. Because they require different enzymes, the digestive process slows down even further when they are combined.
* Use caution: People with any digestive disorders. If lactose intolerance is also present, the digestion process is further disrupted in the intestines.
* Better way: Consume cheese separately from meat, or pair it with vegetables or light carbohydrates.
4. Milk and Cocoa
Generally, this is a decent combination.
* Use caution: In cases of lactose intolerance.
* Better way: Use plant-based or lactose-free milk, or drink cocoa without milk entirely.
5. Beer and Peanuts
Beer contains carbohydrates and carbon dioxide, while peanuts contain fats. Carbohydrates and fats require different digestive conditions, and carbon dioxide adds extra discomfort. The result is bloating, slowed digestion, and heaviness. Beer also puts a heavy strain on the pancreas, while peanuts strain the liver and gallbladder.
* Use caution: People with liver or pancreatic diseases.
* Better way: Eat peanuts with vegetables or on their own; snack on vegetable chips or shrimp when drinking beer.
6. White Bread and Jam
This combination causes a sharp spike in insulin levels.
* Use caution: Those at risk for insulin resistance, obesity, or diabetes.
* Better way: Replace white bread with whole-grain bread and use unsweetened spreads like hummus, pâté, or vegetable spreads (caviar).
7. Fruit with Other Foods
Combining fruit with other foods causes fermentation due to the high sugar content in the fruit.
* Use caution: Always.
* Better way: Eat fruit as a separate snack, ideally 1–2 hours before or after a main meal.
8. Fish and Milk
These products require different digestive environments. Fish is best absorbed when warm, while milk is usually cold. Fish (especially fatty fish) increases gastric acidity, while milk neutralizes it. This leads to slowed digestion, heaviness, and bloating. If lactose intolerance is involved, the situation worsens in the intestines.
* Use caution: People with gastrointestinal diseases or lactose intolerance.
* Better way: Eat fish with vegetables and consume milk separately (provided you have healthy digestion).
Final Tip: The nutritionist advises those who prefer waking up late not to force themselves to eat early breakfasts. It is better to postpone your first meal until a time that feels comfortable for you.
